FAQs
Parkinson’s disease is a disease in which there is deficiency of dopamine in the brain. It presents with symptoms of stiffness, rigidity, tremors, and postural instability. It can also have symptoms like – anxiety, depression and sleep problems.
Parkinson’s disease was once thought to be a disease of the elderly. In the past few decades, there is a shift in demographics. Many patients come with symptoms of Parkinson’s disease below the age of 50.
Parkinson’s disease can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors.
Atypical PD include diseases like - Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), Multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Vascular Parkinsonism.
There can be features like early falls, severe memory problems, significant syncopal symptoms, early urine complaints and poor response to adequate doses of levodopa treatment. These are red flags and may suggest atypical PD.
Medical treatment is currently available and they try to maintain the dopamine level in brain. Patients should never add or remove any drug without the consultation from their treating physician.
Some patients may not show sustained response to medication after few years of the disease. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a good treatment option for such patients. It is a surgery in which a small electrode is implanted in the brain and provides symptomatic relief to the patient. Only your doctor will let you know whether you require a medical or surgical treatment.
Parkinson’s disease does not have a significant impact on memory, so majority of the patients do not suffer from significant forgetfulness in Parkinson’s disease.
