Amrita Hospital’s Department of Cardiology has made a habit of going first.
Over the years, it has introduced treatments and services never before offered in India or Kerala, from micro heart pumps to dedicated facilities for daycare angiograms, amyloidosis and women’s heart health. Today, the department covers the full range of modern adult cardiology, with specialised clinics for complex and inherited heart conditions, advanced cardiac imaging and cath labs, and round-the-clock angioplasty for heart attacks. Its training programmes attract medical professionals from 18 states across India, while research and a heart team approach keep everyday care grounded in evidence.
Landmark Achievements
The department has a long record of pioneering cardiac care, with several firsts in India and Kerala.
Firsts in India
- Impella micro heart pump, introduced to support the heart’s pumping during high-risk procedures
- Radial Lounge, a dedicated daycare facility for angiograms
- Amyloidosis Centre
- Cardio-Oncology Clinic, caring for the heart health of people with cancer
Firsts in Kerala
- Impella-assisted multivessel angioplasty
- Minimally invasive TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) through the carotid artery
- TAVI assisted by intravascular lithotripsy
- Percutaneous closure of ventricular septal rupture
- Women’s Cardiac Centre
Specialised Clinics and Centres
The department runs focused clinics for specific heart conditions.
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic
- Treatments including alcohol septal ablation and septal myectomy, backed by the largest hypertrophic cardiomyopathy repository in South East Asia.
- Marfan and Aortic Disease Centre
- Integrated genetic testing and interventional care for aortic disorders.
- Heart Failure Clinic
- Advanced medical management and device therapies.
- Cardiovascular Genomics Centre
- India’s largest and most comprehensive service of its kind, offering diagnosis and treatment for all forms of inherited cardiovascular disease.
- Pacemaker and Electrophysiology Clinic
- Management of heart rhythm disorders and follow-up care for implanted devices.
- Express Clinic
- Fast-track evaluation and treatment for urgent cases.
Advanced Clinical Infrastructure
The department’s facilities are built to handle high patient volumes and cardiac emergencies with precision.
- Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories
- Twin suites with Siemens HICOR digital imaging, among the busiest in India and fully networked for complex interventions.
- Coronary Care Unit
- A nurse for every patient, advanced life support and a Heart Command Centre that coordinates with mobile units for safe patient transfers.
- Non-invasive Imaging Suite
- High-field cardiac MRI and multi-detector CT scanners for precise cardiovascular diagnosis.
- Nuclear Cardiology
- A Siemens gamma camera for thallium and MIBI perfusion studies, viability testing and ventilation-perfusion lung scans.
- Electrophysiology Laboratory
- A three-dimensional non-contact mapping and navigation system that shows the heart’s structures in real time, guiding catheters to treat complex arrhythmias.
Core Treatment Modalities
The department’s services cover every aspect of modern adult cardiology.
- Interventional Cardiology
- Round-the-clock primary angioplasty for heart attacks. Patients are taken directly to the cath lab instead of the emergency room, so blood flow is restored quickly. Services also include fractional flow reserve (FFR), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and rotablation.
- Structural Heart Disease
- Keyhole treatment for valve disease, including mitral, aortic, pulmonary and tricuspid balloon valvotomy, along with device closure of congenital heart defects.
- Peripheral and Endovascular Interventions
- Carotid artery stenting to prevent stroke, renal angioplasty, limb-saving recanalisation and stent-graft repair of aortic aneurysms.
- Electrophysiology Services
- Radiofrequency ablation, cardiac resynchronisation therapy for heart failure and implantation of cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).
Academic and Training Contributions
The department is deeply committed to medical education, and its training programmes draw doctors and trainees from across the country. It is also active in research and follows the heart team approach, so evidence-based treatment protocols are part of everyday clinical practice.
